The Funeral Home: Previewn every funeral home there is a door that says, “employees only”. A lot happens behind these closed doors. Dead bodies are carefully and artfully made to look like they are at rest, conversations naturally drift toward existential questions, and there are arguments over what to order for lunch. Lewis Funeral Home is the oldest black-owned business in San Antonio. While East San Antonio has been changing, Lewis Funeral Home has not – and it’s not just the wood paneling in the lobby that’s stayed the same. It’s an essential institution in the community for both its long-term presence and the real, tangible services it offers. The employees of Lewis Funeral Home know how to care for their community in times of grief. They have carefully choreographed rituals that create space for people while mourning. But in the private corners of the funeral home, particularly in the embalming room, you begin to see what really makes Lewis Funeral Home unique. It's where James Bryant honed his craft as an embalmer over a 40-plus year career.

UnderneathWater made the Hill Country, streams and rivers carving the ancient plateau and giving “rise” to the hills seen today.Water’s influence is definitive. And, floods notwithstanding, this influence is realized slowly and quietly over geologic time: placid surfaces and floating leaves belying the furious power and mysterious tangle of life beneath.Curiously enough, the word “influence” itself is aquatic in origin.· The action or fact of flowing in … said of the action of water and other fluids, and of immaterial things conceived of as flowing in.· The inflowing … (into a person or thing) of any kind of … secret power or principleWhat is the secret power that sometimes infuses a place? What is the influence of the Frio River? Such forces are notoriously fluid and hard to pin down. Maybe the place to begin the search is underneath the surface.
